You are often faced with the question of whether you want to spend your holiday by the water or in the mountains. Just travel to Füssen, because here, you have both. Around the picturesque Allgäu town, there are numerous lakes that invite you to swim and enjoy various water sports such as sailing, surfing or boating. Framed by magnificent mountains, one lake is more beautiful than the other. Let us introduce you to the most charming lakes around Füssen.

Forggensee

Forggensee, which is around 9 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, is the largest lake in the Allgäu and a perfect destination for a holiday in Füssen. Especially in summer, when the reservoir reaches its full water level, it allows for numerous recreational activities such as surfing, water skiing and sailing. You can charter sailing boats here or bring your own and park them at a guest mooring, which you can get through the local sailing clubs. The lakeside path is popular all year round with walkers and cyclists, who enjoy the magnificent mountain panorama along the way.

With a length of 40 kilometres, doing a lap around the lake is ideal for an eventful cycling tour. If you don't want to complete the whole lap, you can hop on a passenger boat of Forggense-Schifffahrt along with your bike at several stops along the way during the summer months. Several times a day between June and mid-October, two passenger ships operate here, inviting you to take unforgettable boat tours. Enjoy the views of the mountains, the old town of Füssen and the royal castles.

Hopfensee

The beautiful Hopfensee lake also invites you to enjoy swimming and various water sports. The area around the spa town of Hopfen am See, which is part of Füssen, is also known as the “Riviera of the Allgäu” because of its southern flair. Wellness in harmony with nature is offered here by various Kneipp facilities, of which the floating Kneipp island is the most remarkable.

Stroll along the chic lakeside promenade at Lake Hopfen, enjoy the view from the terrace of a café or enjoy the diverse nature impressions on a hike or bike ride along the circular lakeside path.

Weißensee

The Weissensee is the centre of the rural Füssen district of the same name. Surrounded by picturesque hillside forests and lush green meadows, the lake is truly an enchanting spot, perfect for walks and hikes in the surrounding area.

For swimming fun in summer, there is an open-air swimming pool here and also for fishing, Lake Weissensee, like the other Allgäu waters presented here, offers very good conditions.

Alpsee

Bathing with the best view of the mountains and the royal castles? This is possible in the Alpsee, which belongs to the municipality of Schwangau. The lake is considered King Ludwig II's former favourite bathing lake, which is hardly surprising given its magnificent location. Spend a beautiful summer day at the Alpseebad, take a pedal boat ride or enjoy the scenery with a walk along the shore, where you will also find the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. In the winter, the water is a popular meeting place for ice skating. The neighbouring Schwansee is worth a trip as well.

The beautiful Alatsee, the Bannwaldsee and the Mittersee and Obersee in the Faulenbach valley, which are well-known lakes from some of the Allgäu crime novels, are also wonderful for swimming in the summer or for a great trip into nature. In addition to magnificent mountains, there also are plenty of charming lakes waiting for you on holiday in Füssen.
